The Atonement, or AT-ONE-MENT

It always seems to us as if our viewpoint is right and the other viewpoint, regardless of who holds it, is wrong. No viewpoint is ever “the truth”. Your viewpoint is never “the truth", and conversely, the other person’s point of view isn’t “the truth” either. In fact, no viewpoint is ever “the truth” because a point of view is a belief and no belief is ever the truth.  A belief is a statement about reality that feels like the truth.  It is the meaning we have given to an event or series of events, none of which have any inherent meaning. Your Viewpoint Is Never “The Truth” ~ Morty Lefkoe

That’s why you can’t judge the messenger. There are many teachers of Truth.

New thought was riddled with people that spoke of the Atonement, or AT-ONE-MENT, long before ACIM.

"Heaven must be an interior state before it can be an external condition. . . ." wrote Warren Felt Evans. Evans was influenced by Swedenborg who wrote:

“. . . The sufferings of the cross are not to be viewed as a payment of a debt for us by one divine being to another. This commercial view of the atonement belongs only to those who are in the lowest degree natural and cannot grasp the higher spiritual view.” (See Arcana Coelestia by Emanuel Swedenborg . 10, 152.)

Of course Hopkins wrote of it but from Divine Science we find Cramer, Brooks and Murray while Home of Truth had Annie Rix Militz  (see Atonement)

From Religious Science we had Holmes:

It is man, not God, who needs an At-one-ment. The act of atonement must be on the part of man and not of God. Man may need salvation, but God is already conscious of Complete Life and Being.
Man's whole trouble lies in the fact that he believes himself to be separated from the Source of Life. He believes in duality. The At-one-ment is made to the degree that he realizes the Unity of Good. Man needs, and always has needed, to know the Truth about himself and God; and anything that helps to fill this need would be an act of atonement. THE ATONEMENT  The Science of Mind, by Ernest S(hurtleff) Holmes [1926]

The Vicarious Atonement is over, but the real At-one-ment has only begun. We are just beginning to realize what Love and Life mean. Every time we give of ourselves to others, helping them to overcome their troubles, we are performing an At-one-ment; we are proving the Unity of Good. The Wisdom of Ernest S(hurtleff) Holmes by Ernest S. Holmes

 “Any person who contacts the race-mind with the desire to lift it above its own level, will thereby, go through a vicarious atonement. But the thought of mofbidity that theology had given to the message of atonement is entirely erroneous. It is not a morbid thing but a glorious one. Atonement could not be morbid., but must always produce a realization of Unity and of Good. The life of Jesus is not a sad story, but is the account of a Man Who so completely realized His own At-one-ment that He had realization to spare and to give to all who believe in his teaching. His life was a triumphant march from the cradle into eternity,  and not from the cradle to the grave. He swallowed the grave in victory, because of His At-one-ment. Jesus left no grave and no dead man behind Him.
The At-one-ment, then, is a glorious recognition of fulfillment and completion.”
    The Science of Mind  By Ernest S(hurtleff) Holmes

Charles Fillmore mentioned it in “Keep A True Lent”, “Dynamics For Living”, “Talks On Truth
Indeed at Unity itself : the Foundations of Unity series states “Jesus did not make the atonement for us—He showed us how to re-establish the ideal in which we were created. Real atonement comes through sustained alliance between man and his indwelling Christ nature (Lord).”
“Metaphysically, the “atonement” is the blending and harmonious functioning of man’s thinking and feeling with the Christ mind. Men in an unenlightened state of knowing have felt themselves separated from goodness by looking upon God as “a holy Being” separate from them; feeling their iniquity in not being able to measure up to His standard of holiness. However, Jesus of Nazareth taught and demonstrated at-one-ment. “I and the Father are one,” He said, (John 10:30).” Unity School of Christianity By Rev. Keith Gibson History and Development

Sit down quietly every day and in the silence wait patiently for some true word to fall into your mind. This word will guide you aright. There will be no failure or misfortune in your lot. Say this always and under all circumstances: “I praise the Lord.” ECH

“I represent the Truth, the whole Truth and nothing but the Truth;
It is unerring, It never mistakes; there are no mistakes in the Divine Plan
for me; there is no fear; there is no limitation, poverty, want nor lack;
I stand in the midst of eternal opportunity,
which is forever presenting me with the evidence of its full expression.
I am joy, peace and happiness; I am the spirit of joy within me;
I am the spirit of peace within me, of poise and power;
I am the spirit of happiness within me;
I radiate life; I am Life. There is One Life;
that Life is my Life now.”
Holmes
