THE MEANING OF ABSENT TREATMENT

The most effective method of healing or influencing the behavior of others consists in what is known as “the silent or absent treatment”.

When the subject is unaware, objectively, of the suggestion given him there is no possibility of him setting up an antagonistic belief. It is not necessary that the patient know, objectively, that anything is being done for him.

From what is known of the subjective and objective processes of reasoning, it is better that he should not know objectively of that which is being done for him. The more completely the objective mind is kept in ignorance of the suggestion, the better will the subjective mind perform its functions. The subject subconsciously accepts the suggestion and thinks he originates it, proving the truth of Spinoza’s dictum that we know not the causes that determine our actions.

The process of all healing is a definite, positive, mental attitude, an inner attitude, or a way of thinking, called faith. Healing is due to a confident expectancy, which acts as a powerful suggestion to the subconscious mind releasing its healing potency.

In treating another the patient should seem to you all mental - or nothing but thoughts & their sickness the result of their bad thoughts - if you can turn them to see their true self & have the right thought the error will vanish.

It was P. P. Quimby who introduced the distinction between the "scientific man" with the wisdom of Christ to draw upon[Divine Mind] and the "man of opinions," always changing, subject to errors, fears, and other false beliefs[Carnal Mind or EGO]. Dr. Quimby's silent realization consisted in making a clear-cut separation between the two minds. All later disciples of the silent method have made an equivalent separation in their own terms. The mind that is swayed by opinions is the "carnal mind," and to be "carnally minded is death." It is this carnal-mindedness which Dr. Quimby sought to banish by affirming the reality of the truth which makes men free, the truth we possess when we have the mind of Christ. No one can make much headway in this field without drawing this distinction.

Spiritual Healing
Quimby's intuitive method differed from the affirmative method now employed by those who use suggestion as the chief agency in healing.
The first dependence was put upon intuitive impressions gained by sitting silently by the sick, and rendering the mind (the spiritual senses) inwardly open to discern the inner conditions and causes.

The process known as "silent treatment" operates directly through the sub-consciousness[mind] of the patient, and the changes made disclose themselves in the mental atmosphere[mind]. The healer is thus able to see what his work is accomplishing and to perceive the forthcoming changes long before the patient becomes aware of them. There seems to have been a pronounced demarcation from the early teachings of some of the New Thought teachers and churches when it comes to healing.

In reality we are all dreaming; when man fully awakens he knows that planets are thoughts, suns and moons are thoughts, and his own consciousness is the space which sustains them all. He begins to realize that the whole world is a thought. For example, he becomes aware of the fact that the body is not real, but it is a thought or idea held in consciousness. The body has no life apart from consciousness. He realizes that there is absolutely no reality to matter or the body of man; it is a group of ideas and opinions. Man gives life to ideas and opinions as long as he believes them. When he disbelieves the errors, these ideas have no life in them.What has transpired is all a dream, a dream of the unreality.

He created the "Silent Treatment" and set the example for all types of mental and New Thought healers.

That a person may grow simply and naturally into knowledge and use of psychical power is shown in the case of P. P. Quimby, pioneer of the spiritual healing movement in America. We may consider his experience quite apart from any interest in his teachings or any objections to them. The example would serve as well if he had taken up any other form of spiritual work on an original basis. For the significant consideration is that he had an open mind, no beliefs that kept him from investigations for truth's sake, and no attitude towards life which closed the door to inner guidance so far as any of us know who have had acquaintance with his relatives and his followers. Again his experience is interesting because he was not in any sense a spiritist, and apparently had no reason for attributing any of his experiences or guidances to angels or spirits. He did not seek to cultivate psychical power for its own sake and the problems of psychical research did not exist for him. Such power as he acquired came in the course of investigations with purely practical interests in view.
