Nothing exists for us unless we perceive it and are conscious of its presence. If we do not perceive Divine Love; if we are not conscious that Divine Love is around and about us, upholding, encircling and infolding us, then to our consciousness there is no Divine Love.

Whether a thing is true to our consciousness or not does not alter either the fact or the nature of the thing. Divine Love is, and recognition of it will prove to us that it can not fail us, for it is eternal, changeless and omnipotent. Christ IS, the Light that saves you from a world of thought, the Life that is your True Identity, the YOU of you, the You that has always been and always will be, the Enlighten One that lights every man. Like it or not, no mental route will take you into heaven. Your trinkets, crystals, chakras, séances, incantations, positional meditations, will fall off the end of the world with you, and you will find that once again you are alone and without God in that world! These things can’t hurt you! They have no real power. There is only ONE POWER! GOD. These things are of no significance whatsoever in Truth. There is only ONE WAY in, and that is "I AM THE WAY".

When Quimby died there was no succession. No one to carry on. New Thought became more of a religion than a healing science which was never Quimby’s intention.

Dresser states:

The so-called prosperity treatment had not yet been heard of. Nothing had as yet been said about "the cause and cure of old age*." [* This type of thought was made popular by Eleanor Kirk, author of Perpetual Youth, Brooklyn, 1895.]
Chapter 6 - THE MENTAL SCIENCE PERIOD

The implication is this. Quimby taught healing. People became anal-ytical , they started looked at other theologies and philosophies then adding bells and whistles to the teachings. If you don’t have health, then what good is prosperity. Nothing can affect you but what importance you place upon it. You are Spirit, not a body, so what use is Perceptual Youth in that context.

I took a prosperity course and it specified doing this, this, this and this. The reality is there are no conditions on matter, only the significance you place upon material things. Someone designed the course and inadvertently put limitations on it. As Neville often said “goals are merely realizing the future NOW.”

"What we believe, that we create," so Quimby had taught. It was essential to believe that all causality was in the realm of mind. Meanwhile, the natural universe could take care of itself. It was not destroyed by the proposition that "there is no matter."Some of the beliefs passing current in the mental-science period would indeed seem absurd to those of us who try to think matters out to the end, as well as to believers in natural facts and the ability of men of science to state facts apart from theoretical prejudice. But we must remember the bondages out of which the people had come who exclaimed in their enthusiasm that they could "eat mince-pie at midnight," or anything else they liked at any time, and suffer no inconvenience; since "there is no quality in food save what the mind gives it, in the unconscious beliefs of the race." What people were trying to do was to eliminate the "false beliefs," "the errors of mind," which had held them in subjection. They did this with enthusiasm and the results were on the whole good. It was natural, having concluded that medicines and drugs have no qualities save those attributable to the suggestions which people have associated with them, that all material things and conditions should be regarded as affecting man according to his belief. The point was that, whether agreeing with [MEB’s Eddyisms] in full or not, one should at least go as far as Quimby and Evans went, showing that matter contains "no intelligence or power in itself." To take this stand was to be prepared to overcome all adversaries.
Chapter 6 - THE MENTAL SCIENCE PERIOD

Quimby was all about healing disease and said it was fear that caused a chemicalization that created the dis-ease.

Many of the devotees left the churches to which they belonged as disciples of the old theology, passed through a reaction against that theology, and found their religion in healing the sick. Thus in time the meeting devoted to an exposition of the new therapeutism took the place of the service in the churches. The silent treatment was akin to prayer or worship, on Its religious side, and so "the silence" as it has since been called became a part of the meeting. Such meetings used to be held Sunday evenings, so as to avoid a conflict of hours in the case of followers who still wished to attend the morning service in the established churches. The Wednesday evening experience meeting early came into vogue, everybody was invited to take part, and so the meetings became democratic. One of the early leaders in these meetings in Boston, J. W. Winkley, had been a Unitarian minister. Others had contemplated entering the ministry or were teachers. Hence there were devotees capable of directing the meetings and introducing the element of worship, or leading in regular instruction. The name given to the first of these independent societies in Boston, "Church of the Divine Unity," suggests the point of emphasis in such worship. The aim was to throw off the old theology and substitute the idea of the immanence of God in His wisdom, as the omnipresent help "in times of trouble." ~
Chapter 6 - THE MENTAL SCIENCE PERIOD

Establishing a church new theology was the furthest thing from his mind.

Now destroy man's belief and introduce God's truth and then we are set free from this world of error and introduced into the world of light or science where there is no death but the living God or science. This science will lead us along to that happy state where there is no sickness or sorrow or grief, where all tears are wiped away from our eyes, there to be in the presence of this great truth that will watch us and hold us in the hollow of its hand and will be to us a light that will open our eyes. We shall not then be deceived by the blind guides who say, "Peace, peace," where there is no peace. Then we shall call no one master or leader for there is only one that leads us and that is God. He puts no restrictions upon us for our lives are in His hands or science, but our happiness or misery is in our belief. For our belief is what follows a direction. So if we are misdirected and disease or misery is the result, blame not God, or the result, but blame the cause or false direction.

A Science of Truth, maybe.

Man's belief is all matter. His religion and ideas of disease are all false beliefs, and the effects produced on his body are caused by them. Man's creator is in him, and governs him, yet he is recognized only as a principle without wisdom.

This world is man's belief. The truth is the science or true shepherd. This truth put in practice is that which takes away the sins or errors of man, and the end of error is the end of the world. The introduction of religion based on science is the commencement of the new world. The science which shall devour our errors is the teaching of this great truth. . . . To preach Christ is to put heaven in practice, to liberate the poor and sick who have been bound by the false ideas of the world. I know of no other world than that which Jesus set up in man's heart, which meant the mind. He never had any reference to this globe as a world. His two worlds were science and error. He made but one for himself, and that was science. But man has made another world from his beliefs and that was the world that he came into, in order to cast out the children of the kingdom of error into a lake of fire. That is, he enters man's belief and destroying all error, he establishes his kingdom of science so that men shall come from the east and west, north and south and sit down with wisdom. It is then that the children of error are cast out and that was the end of the world. Then a new world begins and a new religion springs up based on science. Under this religion, no man will say to another, Do what is right, for all will do right because he will feel right in so doing.

Bear in mind.

When we are ill, we merely think or imagine we are sick. Disease is simply a myth. It can be banished with a thought.

That doesn’t mean you march into a hospital and tell someone lying in bed that. It’s real enough to them. (it’s happened with ACIM students) It means you do what feels right in that situation. Quimby didn’t treat advanced stages of illnesses. As David Bush said:

One person gets his healing from a Christian Scientist. Another gets his healing from a Psychologist and someone else gets his healing from another mental practitioner, but if you are healed, there can be nothing but TRUTH in that particular mental science which you have taken hold of--for you!
He didn’t mention that THAT TRUTH is Divinty/God in relation to your beliefs.

“Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).

His great strength was in his Clairvoyance, from which he determined what his patients thought was the problem, their belief that really first caused the problem and to the patient he explained this; thus establishing his credibility. This state he entered was in the Light, emanating from the silence within. No angels, spirit guides.
Someone at church once talked about their coming out of the closet.

But you, when you pray, enter into your closet and lock your door, and pray to your father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you in public. Matthew 6:6

The Silence is from within, not from without.

One begins to realize something of the experiences of the saints and mystics down the ages, in that they found they had to become still, to meditate, which really means to become still in God’s Presence and let God do what He wants to do. To become still, in a recognition that you have become still in the Almighty Presence of the Great Father, and that because you are not preventing Him by resistance, by lack of faith, by worries and fears and tensions, He now naturally manifests His Will, His Peace, and His Perfection throughout your being, as you allow Him to take charge of your mind and soul and body.
This meditation, this being still in God, is a fundamental. And yet, even amongst Christians, there isn’t one in ten thousand who seriously practices meditation as a fundamental need of the Christian Way of Life. We talk our way to God - yes - in many prayers. We try to understand the infinite by definition. We listen to dogma and creed, and often great philosophies concerning God. But very seldom do we close down our thinking and say, "Here Lord. Here am I. Take me as I am. You know what to do with me, Father. Do it. I am here." And to be still, receptive and listening to all that God will pour forth. It can only happen when we become absolutely convinced that the Great Father will do these things in the Silence. It can only happen when we are absolutely sure that the greatest activity that can ever happen in a human being comes when we become still and stop doing ourselves.

For a long time I looked outside of myself.
The Truth is within.
As I continue to study the New Thought authors I realize each one wrote of the Truth in their terms, their “map of the territory”, their frame of reference, their experience. But their experience may not be your experience. In “Lessons in Truth” Cady reduced ECH’s “five universal affirmations” to “four comprehensive affirmations”. They both were right.

As Emmet Fox said

“seek the Presence of God in your own heart, and to use books, lectures, and churches only as a means to that one end “.

Turn away from the World for awhile and listen to Me! Forget yourself and realise that I am God, the Christ Spirit within you now. You and I are one. We never can be separated because you are of My Own Being. My Life is your life. My Mind is your mind. My Love is your love. You are exactly as I am in miniature, with the same eternal life and an infinite potential for increasingly wonderful expression. You are because I am.

The other Law you need to know is the Law of Mind which insists, necessarily that an experience can only become real to you when you recognize it. What ever you accept in consciousness becomes real. You exercise your faith every time you do this. You have faith in the ground you walk upon, faith in the life within you, faith in the Sun and the rain, faith in the chairs and bed you use, faith in your ability to come here or go there. All such experiences you daily accept as Reality and thus they become concrete experience.

It is this Law which naturally must operate when you think of Me. I too can only become a Reality when you consciously accept Me as Real. When you know I am the Almighty Love, Wisdom, intelligence and all good within you, you are free forever.

From this moment I charge YOU to fill your life with love and to trust Me in all things. Ask and I am instantly the Perfect Answer. Give me your burdens, and I will disperse them. Forget the ills you hold so closely by remembering Me. Forgive yourself in loving Me, and serving all. I am your Lord, and when you keep your mind filled with the knowledge that health, joy, Prosperity and everything that is Perfect are now pouring into your life they become your own.

It is the simplest, most perfect, and profound prayer ever given to man and it holds within it the keys to the Kingdom of God.

And Jesus Christ taught us to pray, saying:
Our Father, which art in Heaven,

It is the simplest, most perfect, and profound prayer ever given to man and it holds within it the keys to the Kingdom of God. Its perfect fulfilment by man would bring the whole world into a paradise of peace. It is a prayer which is spoken by millions of people every day. But unfortunately, its wonder-working power is mainly lost because the words are usually spoken without a glowing realization of the release of God's Love and Will for us. It is not enough to pray in a repetitive fashion, because the words lose their meaning, and without faith in the implication of what we say, prayer is as ineffectual as a giant locomotive with the throttle closed.

Therefore, let us pray as our Lord Jesus Christ must have prayed. Let us place ourselves in His mind, and pour out from our souls this mighty prayer of faith, through which we are lifted into the very presence of our Father, recognizing and believing that He responds immediately to our worship, love and faith.

. . . The Great Silence . . .

No matter how much we talk about God, we are always involved in opinion about that which can never be defined. No matter how much we may talk about Him, in the end we are always brought back to one basic need to experience the Presence of God as the active principle of life itself. In the end, there can be no other way than making ourselves available to Him in a realisation that there is only God in the entire universe, that nothing exists outside the range of this infinite Spirit.

Only when we know this realistically, as a fundamental in life, can we really begin that wonderful spiritual journey in which the Love of God becomes revealed in thought and word and action. What we are all really seeking to know is that we can never be separated from the Spirit of the Father.

The frightening thing in this civilisation is that we have become obsessed by the idea that the only things that will ever get done are those which will be done in our own strength, by our own consciousness, by our own activity. And I suppose, until we really know something of this infinite activity of God, we shall continue to find it difficult to believe that simply by becoming still all power is swinging into action to bring forth every necessary Divine Adjustment.

That is where your faith comes in. You have to do it in order to experience it. It is the testimony of countless people right down through recorded history, from the ancient mystics of the East long centuries before Christ to present-day experience, that when they come into meditation, when they learn to become still in the Presence of God, dramatic events begin to unfold in their lives.

Brother Mandus (1907 - 1988)




A contemporary expression of New Thought in England was the dynamic World Healing Crusade, founded by Brother Mandus in 1953, with headquaters in Blackpool, England.

Brother Mandus was uninterested in the formation of a specific group which might carry on in the fashion of New Thought centers, but rather, he says "the whole of our enterprise is dedicated to helping other churches, whether New Thought or orthodox, to lift their vision and express their love and faith, and to inspire people to come with these spiritual qualities into the church of their choice." Thus, although "completely at one with the general New Thought vision and concept," he regarded his crusade as wholly interdenominational, but "based entirely on the full expression of positive Christianity." He thought of the World Healing Crusade as providing something like a bridgehead between New Thought and the orthodox churches. He felt personally that the "real possibility for New Thought lies in introducing the principles in a form which can be adopted and accepted by the whole spiritual community."

Brother Mandus was born in an English seaport - Hartlepool, son of a water clerk for a ship's chandler. An average mischievous youngster in school, he and a companion, in celebration of Guy Fawkes Day and the Gunpowder Plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament, had made gunpowder with chemicals bought with their pooled resources, constructed bombs of ink bottles filled with the powder, and nearly succeeded in blowing up the house and neighborhood. Naturally they received a sound thrashing. As an aftermath of this experience, he says, standing one day before a mirror in a gilt frame, somehow he knew that "there was only eternal life and endless security." He says he felt so strongly that he would live forever that he took a nail and scratched on the bottom of the frame, "I will live forever."

His parents belonged to the established Church of England, and he was baptized and confirmed in that church. At nineteen years of age he went to South America, where he spent seven years. Returning to England at twenty-six, he visited a friend who had undergone a remarkable change since they had last met, and they talked of things spiritual until the small hours of the night, when, he says, he was filled with a Power from beyond himself and knew he had to respond to it. He had not up to that time even owned a Bible. He got one next morning and opened it first to John 15, "I am the true vine." As he read , he says, "these words burned in my mind like fire . . . it was as though the Voice of Christ was speaking to me." He knew then "that the words were truth and that here was a way of life with infinite possibilities."

World War II came and went. Meanwhile he had been introduced by a friend to the most important practice he had ever known, how to meditate in the Silence. And in this practice he spent many hours. People came to share their troubles with him and he was able to help them. He decided to close his present business, which had suffered severe financial reversals, and begin a full-time healing ministry. He writes, "I was a man on a mission and the happiest man in the world." Within a few weeks he had set up a Sancuary, two modest rooms, one for an altar and one for an office in which to carry on his work. His first patient was a woman of some sixty years of age , suffering with arthritis in the legs and badly crippled. She was completely healed, he reports, apparently instantly, after prayer - a wonderous sign to him. He knew, he says, that "this Love-Power of Christ is the same today as it ever was" and "in this one act of answered prayer was potentially the complete solution to every problem on earth, from personal disease and disaster right through to warfare."

Others came and were healed instantly; some yielded only slowly to cure; and some received no physical healing, but were "lifted up in courage, faith and love." Daily he discovered the "external evidence of divine guidance, healing, supply and steady progression." At first he only prayed with people who came for help. Then people began writing for healing intercession, and so the ministry was extended until before long hundreds of letters were received daily from all over the world, and Brother Mandus reports that many were healed and blessed in this way. It soon became evident, he writes, that the Power of the Written Word in letters formulated in prayer is effective without limits of time and space.

A little later he felt that he should take his gospel out into the world. He had had no training in public speaking, but when invited to address a company of people he did so without notes, and as he began speaking all nervousness disappeared and he was given words to say. He eventually spoke to crowded halls and churches all over the world, and always, he relates, the words are given to him as he speaks.

One night it came to him that he should publish a free monthly magazine devoted to the principles he was teaching through the Sanctuary and through correspondence. He had no money for such an enterprise, but by the time the printer's bill was presented, provision for its payment had been made, and before very long some quarter of a million copies of the Crusader were going out quarterly free of charge to those who asked for them - a million a year. And there was always money to pay the printing and postage bills.

As the first Sanctuary became unavailable, another and larger was offered, and when this was outgrown the present Sanctuary and World Healing Crusade headquarters were acquired. Here a dedicated staff carries on the work that Brother Mandus started. In an article in the Crusader (November, 1959) under the title "Pray Without Ceasing," some idea is given of how Brother Mandus' work at the Sanctuary at headquarters is carried on. Letters from all over the world are received daily and placed on the altar, "and the needs of every one are given to the Father for divine adjustment." Every letter is answered with loving help and encouragement "and with the teaching of spiritual principles which naturally helps us all to keep in communion with God and with each other." In addition, says the article, the staff members use a scientific principle only now beginning to be understood and practiced. They have proved that the Love-faith-prayer consciousness when released into the written or spoken word, even in a tape recording or over the radio, releases the same power to those who are receptive to it. They have discovered that they can convey the same "prayer Consciousness to those who listen to them, perhaps ten thousand miles away and months or years later." This is true because "the only reality is Divine Mind, God, and whatever is released in communion with the Lord must be forever real."

The principles and ideas that Brother Mandus taught and practiced were much influenced by the English New Thought leader, Henry Thomas Hamblin, of whom he writes in the Crusader (May, 1960)”

"He has been a beloved spiritual father to me. Our fellowship in spirit and his constant example of the Christ way of life forever inspired me to go steadfastly on the course into which the Lord was directing me."

Also he speaks appreciatively of various contemporary New Thought leaders for whom he has great respect and for whom he had frequently lectured.

His ideas and language are clearly those of New Thought although he was sometimes more orthodox in his terminology than most New Thought leaders. Here is an example of his basic philosophy given in the Crusader (October, 1960) which seems to be precisely what Thomas Troward taught:

"The one most important realization of all is that there is One Mind of God, and that the human mind conscious and subjective, is the gift of Divine Mind for use in a personal way. In truth the individual mind is like a wave on the surface of the ocean, one of millions of similar waves. Each wave is an individual in itself, but one with every other wave in the deeps of the ocean. The water of the wave is the water of the ocean.

"The creative power of mind in man is the same as the creative power of God. He projects universes in Divine imagining; we project our limited creativeness in the tiny self and our civilization, but we use the same power."

Perhaps the main difference between Brother Mandus' viewpoint and that of the New Thought movement in general is that he succeeded in clothing essentially New Thought ideas with an emotional warmth often lacking in the more specifically intellectual formulation so frequently found in New Thought speaking and writing. The All, the Omnipresent, the Perfect Law, Mind, Consciousness, is also the loving Father, manifesting His Perfect Love on a personal level which is, if not easily understood or explained, at least more attractive to the average person whose concern is not a nicely logical system of thought, but the satisfaction of some deeply felt personal need. His ability to express the essential New Thought ideas in terms familiar to the orthodox believer made him welcome in the pulpits of many orthodox churches therefore.
