Radiant Living emerged from the American-based philosophical movement New Thought. New Thought activist Phoebe Holmes travelled the world lecturing about Radiant Health Clubs. Late in 1921 George Schubel decided that his corner of Brooklyn – the neighborhood of Ridgewood (today part of Queens) – would benefit from a radio station. Publisher and editor of the weekly Ridgewood Times, Schubel was not a “radio bug,”
Schubel was given a call sign and permission to broadcast on the 360-meter wavelength. One evening in February, WHN made it’s debut with an improvised program of records, player-piano rolls, and a live piano set by maestro Stroehlein.
On the air an average of fifty-seven hours a week, the station quickly evolved to the rhythms of household life in Ridgewood. At 2:15 programming resumed with Genevieve Behrend’s daily discourse on “Mental Science"
