Nineteenth Century Miracles
Emma
Hardinge Britten (1823–1899) is known for her work as an advocate for the early Modern
Spiritualist Movement. Due to the publication of her speeches and writing on
the spiritual movement, and an incomplete autobiography which was edited by her
sister, much of Emma’s life and work is publicly recorded. She is remembered as
a writer, orator, and practitioner of the movement. Her books,
Modern
American Spiritualism (1870) and Nineteenth
Century Miracles (1884), are extremely
detailed records of the history of early modern spiritualism movement in
America.

In New York Emma Hardinge offered her services
as a medium, for which she refused payment, though she became acquainted with
some of the well-known professional mediums of the day: along with Mrs Kellogg and Ada Foye, she knew the Fox sisters, J. B. Concklin, and Judge Edmonds. She supported
herself by teaching music and directing the choir of a spiritualist church.

The origins and concept of the Seven Principles came through
Emma's mediumship. Guidance received from the Spirit World by Emma inspired her
to utilize teachings given by the eminent philanthropist, Robert Owen, to
provide a basis of suitable guideline/principles to follow in our daily lives. The Principles are equally important to assist us on our
Spiritual pathway. The original Principles were later adapted to suit the newly
formed Spiritualists’ National Union becoming the Seven Principles of
Spiritualism in the format that we are familiar with today.
