"There was a man in our town,
And he was wondrous wise.
He jumped into a bramble bush
And scratched out both his eyes;
And when he found his eyes were out,
With all his might and main,
He jumped into another bush
And scratched them in again.”
This rhyme of “Mother
Goose" veils one of the most stupendous truths, whose facts are being
proven daily: viz., man's own responsibility in making conditions for himself.
Whatever
you see in another that very thing is within yourself, for like sees only like,
and knows nothing of anything unlike itself.
Why
do you reverence goodness in another?
Why
are you a hero worshiper?
Why
do kindness and gentleness perfect such healing in your soul?
Why
do you have such respect for knowledge?
Why
so enraptured with art?
Why
do you so greatly admire Emerson and Shakspear?
Why
does the character of the Christ hold for you such charm?
Everything
that you hope for can be realized if you will take it.
You
absolutely have dominion over all things if you wx ill learn how to exercise
it.
THE writing of every one of these chapters has been a soul-lift to
me, I am persuaded that they will also be of assistance to those who read them;
for how can a book help doing good when it has come from the soul? Freely I
have received, freely I give. F. M. H.
The sage remarks of Mother
Goose are herein interpreted in an unique, entertaining and instructive manner.
In answer to many requests from
readers of Universal Truth and Truth students from many parts of the country, I
have collected together the first articles which appeared in Universal Truth
from month to month, under the heading “Healing Paragraphs” during the first
years which it was my blessed privilege to edit that magazine, and have made
them into a book. Thousands have borne testimony as to soul help received from
them as they appeared, and it is my affirmation of faith that many more
thousands will be helped by them in times to come. That they are filled with
spiritual vitality is testified to by the author, because of the great help she
derived from writing them and practicing them in her own daily mental training.
They have been to her living words of Life, Health, Strength, Plenty and Peace,
which they will likewise be to whomsoever will read and understand them in the
heart, and practice them in the experiences of everyday living. F. M. H.

”The

schools is staggering.” Christian Science, Universal Truth, Truth, and Harmony were all periodicals founded between
1888 and 1900 with women editors and publishers. In November 1887, Mary H. Plunkett started Truth magazine, which became the organ for the international
Christian Science group. Ida Nichols was publisher and editor of Christian
Science
from 1888 to 1891, when it was taken over by Fanny Harley. Later the name of the magazine changed to Universal
Truth,
still run by Fanny
