Dai, University of
Pennsylvania, recent work on a phenomenon she calls the fresh start effect shows that calendar events and
special occasions in our lives demarcate the passage of time (e.g., the
beginning of a new week/month, a promotion, a birthday) and generate fresh
start feelings, which motivate aspirational behaviors such as exercise and
dieting. She is also seeking to understand the importance of breaks through a
study using archival data from a healthcare setting. In this project, she has
demonstrated that taking sufficient breaks from work helps healthcare workers
adhere to professional standards (specifically: sanitizing their hands), while
the fatigue generated as work shifts progress increases employees’ propensity
to “cut corners.”

When their little boat was storm
tossed, the disciples were frightened and
cried, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” Jesus calmed the wind and waves
and said to the disciples, “Where is your faith?”
Where is your faith?
Many have faith in fear and worry more than in God. Do we give way to fear
in the face of threatening circumstances? It would almost seem as though
some people have more faith in the certainty of disaster than in the
certainty of God’s love, care, and protecting presence.
Where is your faith?
You place your faith where it belongs. You have unshakable faith in God,
and you stand by your faith. Your faith is in the power of God at work in
all persons and in all conditions to restore, to bless, to heal, and to
transform.
Where is your faith?
Say it aloud in positive affirmative prayer: “I expect a miracle!”
