In the evening of life, we will be judged on love alone.

John of the Cross (1542 –1591), born Juan de Yepes Álvarez, was a major figure of the Counter-Reformation, a Spanish mystic, Catholic saint, Carmelite friar and priest. He was also a reformer of the Carmelite Order and is considered, along with Saint Teresa of Ávila, as a founder of the Discalced (barefoot) Carmelites.

John wrote many books of practical advice on spiritual growth and prayer that are just as relevant today as they were then. These books include: Ascent of Mount Carmel, Dark Night of the Soul,  A Spiritual Canticle of the Soul, and The Bridegroom Christ.
