Luke 13:22-30 THE RADIATION OF LIGHT
The subject of this lesson is “The Radiation of Light.” It necessitates mentioning some practical illustrations in order to make plain how the divine light shines. The international committee on Bible Lessons declare that the subject of today is “Warning Against Sin.” They also give some practical illustrations to explain their meanings. For instance, they say, “There comes a time when it is too late, when no hope of entering is written over the door. Age comes on. The opportunities flee away and do not return. It is not a joy for Christ to see men thus thrust out. He longs for them to enter in,” etc.The Bible verses on which we all base our meditations are found in Luke 13:22-30.The golden text reads: “Strive to enter in at the straight gate.” The words are from a discourse of Jesus while on his Perean round of preaching. As Perea means “beyond,” “extended,” “farther on,” etc., suppose we take it for a hint that as he was preaching in Perea he meant for us to go beyond the usual explanations of his sayings and dip our oars into the sunny waters of that land beyond the sky into which his own eyes were always gazing.If we do this we find ourselves breathing from on high. We feel that there is sunshine in our veins and not blood. We feel our feet touching new foundations. Taking interpretations farther on in beauty than the committee should permit, we find that Jesus Christ knew a way of living that never had any closing down of hope, feeble age, whimpering Christ, etc. He knew of a city whose gates are never closed. He told of a door which no man could shut. He set the unlimited before us. He set the unspeakable close to the tip of our tongues. He opened up the heavenly highway.Contemplating Jesus’s sermon as here recorded, by going far beyond the committee’s permissions, we find a life-giving breath doth breathe us upward as on pinions. We do not have the sad impressions which the doctrine of no hope, closed opportunities, decrepit winding up, as mostly preached, do most certainly give. ECH 1896
Until your present consciousness is
dropped, you will not be able to rise to another level.
Do not be dismayed. This letting go of
your present identity is not as difficult as it might appear to be.
The invitation of the scriptures, “To be
absent from the body and be present with the Lord” [2Corinthians 5:8,
1Corinthians 5:3, Colossians 2:5], is not given to a select few; it is a
sweeping call to all mankind. The body from which you are invited to escape is
your present conception of yourself with all of its limitations, while the Lord
with whom you are to be present is your awareness of being.
To accomplish this seemingly impossible
feat, you take your attention away from your problem and place it upon just
being. You say silently but feelingly, “I AM”. Do not condition this awareness
but continue declaring quietly, “I AM – I AM”. Simply feel that you are
faceless and formless and continue doing so until you feel yourself floating.
“Floating” is a psychological state which completely
denies the physical. Through practice in relaxation and willfully refusing to
react to sensory impressions, it is possible to develop a state of
consciousness of pure receptivity. It is a surprisingly easy accomplishment. In
this state of complete detachment, a definite singleness of purposeful thought
can be indelibly engraved upon your unmodified consciousness. This
state of consciousness is necessary for true meditation.
This wonderful experience of rising and floating is the
signal that you are absent from the body or problem and are now present with
the Lord; in this expanded state you are not conscious of being anything but I
AM – I AM; you are only conscious of being.
When this expansion of consciousness is
attained, within this formless deep of yourself, give form to the new
conception by claiming and feeling yourself to be that which you, before you
entered into this state, desired to be. You will find that within this formless
deep of yourself all things appear to be divinely possible. Anything that you
sincerely feel yourself to be while in this expanded state becomes, in time,
