The law of reversed effort

The law of reversed effort is essential to getting what you desire. Explained simply The law of reversed effort states the harder you try ( conscious will-power) to do something, the less chance you have of achieving it.
Imagine you are out walking and come across a cake shop. Through the window you see a delicious Cream with Jam Bun. Just the thought of it starts one salivating. Your conscious will is saying move on as the Cream and Jam Bun is not good for your weight control. And so it is not. Your unconscious mind (imagination) at the same time is working against you. The imagination is showing you pictures of how you will feel biting into the bun, your taste buds delightfully sending messages of pleasure to your brain and all the pleasant feelings your body will associate with the Cream and Jam Bun.
The question is what chance do we have with the imagination. This is why imagination trumps will power.

Will Power vs. Imagination

Since the will power now lost the battle with imagination, as we enjoy our Cream with Jam Bun, let us work on our real power. Our imagination.
When we align our imagination with the conscious will our desires will be attracted to us effortlessly. To bring our will power and imagination into congruence we will change our imagination toward our desired result.
Using visualization, imagine passing on the bun for a better looking you down the track. The plaudits you will receive, “wow you look fantastic”, “how did you get that body”. Imagine how much more respect you will have for yourself. How great you will feel in the light of the new you.
This will bring your will power and imagination into congruence with your imagination remaining the dominant thought. Say goodbye to self sabotaging and use the power of imagination to get what you truly desire.
Dr. Irvin Seale mentioned the Law of Reversed Effort in his talks about Quimby at Unity back in the 80’s ( I was smart enough to download them to listen off my computer years ago. Ervin Seale gave a series of lessons entitled "The Quimby Writings" in February, 1981 at the Unity Village Chapel. The link on the Quimby site no longer works.). When he was the minister of a church in New York they prayed left, right and centre for the church to be prosperous. It wasn’t working. When they stopped and he gave it the “Silent Treatment” it became prosperous. It was years later he learned of the Law of Reversed Effort. Does The Golden Key to Prayer apply? Coué made a comment about the power of suggestion. You see a woman on the other side of the ship during a sea voyage who looks a little peaked. You ask if she feels sick and that’s all it takes. But, now suppose you approach a seasoned sailor and ask him the same question. He laughs it off. The same suggestion has different effects on different people. The suggestion has to meet the content of the mind (belief or thought). If the suggestion agrees with the mind the suggestion is positive  (Form and Content in ACIM terminology). That’s why if you haven’t developed a prosperity consciousness then affirmations trigger something inside that says “Yeah, you don’t believe that.”  An affirmation or positive suggestion often turn negative when there is conflict in the mind.

Seale also mentions going deeper into the silence and taking to the man inside. What his little grandchild called the “man in his head”. He also said they’d try to tell the grandchild something and he’d say “Yes I know and what I don’t know the man in my head will tell me.” Now that should be a good indication that perhaps children should be taught to listen to the Holy Spirit.
