If you live in Boston can you find a picture of Miss Eleanor Mel who ran the Boston Home of Truth for over 4o years. Appreciated.
There are many reasons why people fail to reach their objectives but the most important is simply that all systems which are presented on the subject of success are the results of the personal experiences of the writer alone. Remembering your own uniqueness, you will easily transform from the general principles the particular expression which applies to you, and you will find that you will forge ahead while others, who might still be ignoring their fundamental individuality and studying by emulation rather than participation, will find that their path seems to be blocked. Let us, who have taken the first and vital step, just go on walking...[THE WAY TO PERSONAL SUCCESS ~ Fairbrother and Duc de Palatine]
I made the comment 2 years ago I wanted to write a book about New Thought authors. I’ve pretty much exhausted the list of authors but the books keep pouring in. I was led to Quimby and from Quimby spawned New Thought. Would he have been happy with New Thought. No. Quimby was about healing. As he said:
“my practice is unlike all other medical practice, it is necessary to say that I give no medicines and make no outward applications, but simply sit by the patient, tell him what he thinks is his disease, and my explanation is the cure. And if I succeed in correcting his errors, I change the fluids of the system~ and establish the truth, or health. The truth is the cure.”
Without Quimby there would have been no Evans, MEB, the Dressers, ECH, Divine Science, Religious Science and Unity. I don’t preach reading the Bible (or even ACIM for that matter). But I do suggest studying the masters, reading those who had a deep understanding of the TRUTH whether the Bible, the Tao or any other sacred text that leads you to the TRUTH of your own uniqueness. Remembering who or what you are. Everyone could use a mentor. New Thought provides plenty from the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s. Search and you will find.
I did TT for close to 13 years. Something about healing coming “from the father within that does all the work” made me start going through the motions (pretending) yet standing back and silently acknowledging the persons Divinity. And you know what? I cured headaches and had back pain disappear. And they were never any the wiser. And what they said they experienced was theirs to share. I understand more now but there is still a great deal to learn.
“The sick GOT IT”. The healing aspect as was the message of Quimby, ECH and some other proponents of the Mental Cure, Mental Healing or New Thought as it evolved.
New Thought became contaminated by Theosophy, spiritism, Tarots and the Occult. Just read Horatio Dressers “History of New Thought”. Dresser used the phrase "came into vogue" a lot. That doesn’t mean you abandon it. It simply means you research the author and use your intuition and a little discernment.
How to forgive? I don’t know a sure fire method. How to tell when you have forgiven? Maybe this from Joseph Murphy will help:
Can you see the other person as happy, harmonious, joyous, etc.? If not, you have not forgiven or forsaken. These are the weeds you must pluck out. The roots are still there, and the roots of bitterness wither by indifference. This is another way to kill that root: Listen to the voice of the other person who wronged you telling you what a wonderful, dignified person you are and how honest and kind you are. Make it real. You want to hear it. Get into the mood of that mental picture.
