What Is a Clairvoyant Person?
![]() |
| PPQ |
It is a being conscious of his own existence as a living, thinking, seeing, intelligent creature. All this is not seen by the natural man. Then what is the natural man? He is the shadow of the clairvoyant; neither is conscious of the existence of both at the same time. Why do you speak of two when one is only a shadow? The clairvoyant is like a man who is just where he thinks he is. The natural man is governed by a belief. Reason does not enter into the combination of the clairvoyant for if he reasons, he is not clairvoyant. Where is my consciousness? I am conscious of my senses in both states at the same time. I see the substance and shadow at the same time and change the former. I do not see my own shadow, but I see myself as I really am to myself and knowing that I am not as I ought to be, I change that knowledge by comparing myself to health till I feel it. Health is the standard by which we judge ourselves and just as a man deviates from this standard, he is in the dark and makes shadows. These shadows are the feelings of the sick and are called disease. P. P. Quimby's Writings - September 1861
Healing #5: The trouble is in the mind
All effects produced on the human frame are the result of a chemical change of the fluids with or without our knowledge, and all the varieties and changes are accompanied by a peculiar state of mind. If the mind should be directed to any particular organ, that organ might become deranged or it might not. In either case the trouble is in the mind, for the body is only the house for the mind to dwell in, and we put a value upon it according to its worth. Therefore if your mind has been deceived by some invisible enemy into a belief, you have put it into the form of a disease, with or without your knowledge. By my theory or truth I come in contact with your enemy and restore you to health and happiness. This I do partly mentally and partly by talking till I correct the wrong impressions and establish the truth, and the truth is the cure. I use no medicines of any kind and make no applications. I am no spiritualist after the manner of the Rochester rappings[1] and I am not dictated to by any living man but am guided by the dictations of my own conscience as a lawyer is in pleading a case governed by the evidence. A sick man is like a criminal cast into prison for disobeying some law that man has set up. I plead his case, and if I get the verdict, the criminal is set at liberty. If I fail, I lose the case. His own judgment is his judge, his feelings are his evidence. If my explanation is satisfactory to the judge, you will give me the verdict. This ends the trial, and the patient is released. P. P. The videos of the Foundation for "A Course in Miracles"® [FACIM]are designed to help students of "A Course in Miracles" deepen their understanding of its theory, as well as its practical application of forgiveness in their everyday lives. The Foundation is located in Temecula, CA.
Kenneth Wapnick received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 1968 from Adelphi University. He was a close friend and associate of Helen Schucman and William Thetford, the two people whose joining together was the immediate stimulus for the scribing of the Course. Kenneth has been involved with ACIM since 1973, writing, teaching, and integrating its principles with his practice of psychotherapy.
Kenneth answers a student's question about separation and specialness existing on a non-physical level.

He also answers another student's questions:
"When you die and you are in your mind, do you still experience time?";
"Where are my loved ones when they die?" and
"Are they watching over me?"

Spiritualism and Mesmerism I
I will here relate an experiment when on the Kennebec [The Kennebec River is a 150-mile (240 km) river in the state of Maine in the northeastern US]. I had my subject in the sleep. I then requested any of the company to bring me the name of any individual dead or alive, and the subject would find him. A name was accordingly handed me. I passed it to the subject. He took the paper on which the name was written and read the name aloud. At this time the subject was blindfolded so that it was impossible for him to see with his natural eyes. I then told him to find the person.
I will relate his own story.
He said, "This is a man."
"Well," said I, "find him and talk with him."
In a short time he said, "I have found him."
I asked, "What does he say?"
He answered, "He was a married man, had a wife and three children, was a joiner by trade; left his tool chest in a barn, and left between two days, went to Boston, stopped a time, left for the state of New York, worked there for three years, and then died; he has been dead three years."
I told him to bring him here and describe him. He went on to give a general description of a man, and I told him that if there was anything peculiar in his appearance that differed from all others to describe him.
"Well," said he, "there is one thing in which he differs from anyone else in the room. He has a harelip."
This was a fact.
Now as there is no knowledge among the people of the principle by which this was done, the people were left to their own judgment. So I left them arguing, some trying to prove it was the man's spirit, some calling it humbug and collusion. Others went away and told what they saw and heard.
This kind of an experiment I was trying almost every day for over four years. I then became a medium myself, but not like my subject.
I retained my own consciousness and at the same time took the feelings of my patient. Thus I was able to unlock the secret which has been a mystery for ages to mankind. I found that I had the power of not only feeling their aches and pains, but the state of their mind. I discovered that ideas took form and the patient was affected just according to the impression contained in the idea.
For example, if a person lost a friend at sea, the shock upon his nervous system would disturb the fluids of their body and create around them a vapor like a cloud and in this cloud they create the essence of their trouble. This cloud being a part of their nervous system acts upon the body. Now unless the scene can be destroyed, it will destroy the body. This cloud embraces all the phenomena of spiritualism, mesmerism and all other excitements differing according to circumstances.
Every person has around them this cloud or vapor and in that are all their ideas, right or wrong. This vapor or fluid contains the identity of the person. Now when I sit down with a diseased person, I see the spiritual form, in this cloud, like a person driven out of his home. They sometimes appear very much frightened, which is almost always the case with insane persons. I show no disposition to disturb them and at last they approach me cautiously, and if I can govern my own spirit or mind I can govern theirs. At last I commence a conversation with them. They tell me their trouble and offer to carry me spiritually to the place where their trouble commenced.
I was sitting by a lady whom I had never seen before until she called upon me with her father to see if I could help her. The lady had all the appearance of dropsy[1]. I took her by the hand. In a short time it seemed as though we were going off some distance. At last I saw water. It seemed as though we were on the ocean. At length I saw a brig in a gale. I also saw a man on the bowsprit, dressed in an oilcloth suit. At last he fell overboard. The vessel hove to and in a short time the man sank. This was a reality, but it happened five years before.
My explanation is this: The lady lost her husband five years before. He was in a brig off the Bahamas and lost as I described. On hearing of the death of her husband, it produced a nervous shock, producing a chemical action upon her system, which threw off this heat and in this heat, as vapor, she created the cause of her trouble. This was to her the remembrance of some trouble which she could not be reconciled to. This heat is the secret of all the phenomenon that has heretofore been a mystery to mankind. It shows itself in a thousand ways. It is the foundation of all superstition and ignorance. Out of this men form images that frighten them. Persons in fevers create all the scenes that trouble them. It is the material used to create all the ideas and forms of all our false ideas. This is taken for the spirits of the dead. This the spiritualists jump over.
[1] Edema or oedema , formerly known as dropsy or hydropsy, is an abnormal accumulation of fluid beneath the skin or in one or more cavities of the body.
Now to cure the lady was to bring her from the scene of her troubles. This I did and the lady recovered.

"Well," said I, "find him and talk with him."

John 7:33/34
"Yet a little while am I with you and then I go unto him that sent me. Ye shall seek me and shall not find me and where I am, thither ye cannot come."
These words were also misunderstood by the disciples from the darkness of their belief. I will explain them as I understand them.
Christ is that unseen principle in man, of which he is conscious but which he has never considered as intelligence. It is God in us, and when man arrives at that state that he can recognize an intelligence that transcends belief, then death is swallowed up in wisdom. All will acknowledge that every scientific discovery might have been known before, that is, the truth existed before we knew it. We, in like manner, have an existence as active in itself as man in his opinions, but both cannot be seen at the same time for as one dies the other rises. To put man in possession of this truth, it is necessary to destroy the entire religious belief. Jesus endeavored to do this in order to convince man that his only true living self was the science of God. He also labored to prove that the sympathy that we feel towards each other is a living being with all the attributes of intelligence and that it remains when the natural man is destroyed. This was science to him, and its truth said, "I come again," etc.
I believe that Jesus came to convince man of this truth; I believe it and practice it so far as I understand it.
The world, or man's belief, accuses me of making myself equal to Christ as they accused Jesus of making himself equal to God. One of these accusers can visit the sick and with a long face ask God to hear his prayers and raise the sufferer; then if the patient recovers he believes that God blessed the means. But if I attribute my cures to God or Christ, the whole church is against me, and I am accused of making myself equal to Christ. They are not so sensitive about Christ, but it is their own reputation that they fear; they claim to be the ordained instruments of God and if man is saved it must be by their means. Jesus who opposed priestcraft met the same difficulty. It was the duty of the priests to care for men's souls; therefore he must not enter upon that ground else he made himself equal to them, which was blasphemy.
Jesus opposed the doctrine of another world and taught that man continued progressing; therefore at his crucifixion, when the idea matter was killed by opinions, the Christ that governed it was forced away. The casket or idea was left with the disciples and this to them was death. To see a form of Jesus was either to see a spirit or a resurrection of the old form. To him the science was different.
He suffered as a man suffers the penalty of the law. The law of religion said he must die, and when they saw the law of their belief fulfilled, this was the end to the law of man. Now it was necessary that the new revelation of Christ should come to pass and he should show himself to his disciples and others. Therefore the law did what is done by persons now; it put him into a state of unconsciousness, not that he might die, for his belief was that he would return, and the difference of belief made the controversy.
Jesus, like a clairvoyant, went from the idea on the cross to fulfill his promise to the disciples. Unconscious of change, he believed he had flesh and blood and when they thought he was a spirit, he said, "Hath a spirit flesh and bones as ye see me have?" Here he destroyed the belief in death and triumphed over the grave. Phineas Parkhurst Quimby ~ “Jesus, His Belief or Wisdom” [1862]
